I'm so glad you stopped by my blog today to celebrate National Craft Month! My friend Steph at Crafting in the Rain is sponsoring the awesome Craft Month A-Z series, and I'm joining in today with the letter "E".
Now, I don't do embroidery too often. I have RA, and my hands have lost a lot of strength and control over the last ten years since my diagnosis. My stitches aren't all that even, and my lines aren't always straight. But I love the way embroidery looks and how you can make pretty much anything into an embroidered piece!
For this project, I used this free art print by Oh So Lovely
and used the light from the window to trace it onto my muslin fabric.
Then I got to work with my crayons. Yep- crayons! I love the way it looks, and it saves my hands from having to do a lot of satin stitching or other "filler" stitching.
Once I had my colors the way I wanted, I heat set them by placing a thin cloth on top and pressing the fabric with an iron.
I cut a piece of batting to fit the muslin, then put both in an embroidery hoop.
From there, I simply used a running stitch to outline the arrows and a little bit of detail.
The colors match my teal-and-gray bedroom perfectly!
You can turn any print into embroidery, or there are some great, modern books out there. This is not your grandma's cross-stitch!

DeleteOoh that's a great idea! I love hand-sewing (I find the machine too much effort to get set up ;)), but my problem is that I can never think of anything *useful* to sew etc. This would make for such a pretty gift! Pinning :)
